Vous allez découvrir les sports les plus populaires dans le monde anglo-saxon.
> The Commonwealth countries are former members of the British Empire, England's former colonies. These countries include Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Canada and many more. But the United States do not participate.
The Commonwealth Countries gather every four years to compete in several sports. Some of these sports are well-known to us too, for example gymnastics, athletics, volley ball, tennis, table tennis, boxing among others. But some of these sports are not well-known in France. These sports are archery, cricket, hockey, softball and even billiards! They even have a special kind of rugby!
But there is no baseball in the Commonwealth games because baseball is an American sport and Americans do not take part in the Games.
The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is planned for 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland. Do you watch big sports events like that? Which one is your favourite?

Do you speak sport?
Many phrases in English come from sports language originally. “KO” for example comes from boxing. It is short for “Knock Out”: it means “to faint because someone hits you hard”. In American English, “to go the whole nine yards” means “to do something completely, to finish something”: it comes from American football. Players score points when they run 10 yards with the ball: they finish what they start.
We say “I dropped the ball” when we make a mistake, we miss an opportunity, when we lose the advantage, like in football: if the ball falls out of your hands it goes to the other team … On the contrary, “to carry the ball” means that you are the boss because the ball is in your hand and you control the situation.
“To warm the bench” has an exact equivalent in French. “To warm” means “to make hot”: can you find the translation?
Fantasy Football ?
Fantasy football is a game. You pretend to have a team and manage it. You can organize fantasy competition, you can buy and sell players and imagine everything that can happen during a game.
Make several groups in the class, and play fantasy football. Or fantansy cinema: imagine your perfect movie.
Ask questions with your friends to create the rules, setting, the story, etc. Give the answers and play the fantasy game or movie !
