3In ancient Egypt, a scribe was a very respected professionnal.

Only 1 to 4% of the population read. At that time, scribes noted down the entries of food, for the nobles at the court of the pharaon and in the cities.

They copied sacred texts. They noted down the pharaon's messages.

They started school when they were 5 years old and they finished when they were 15 years old.

They studied hieroglyphs, mathematics, geography and they learnt good manners in society.

They were well-paid.

They dressed with a loincloth and people recognized scribes thanks to their sticks and their leather bags.
