Shopping at Harrods.
Locate Harrods on the map.
'Harrods' comes from its creator's familyname, Charles Henry Harrod. This man opened his first shop in London (Borough High Street) in 1824. At the time, he was only 25 years old! He sold textile fabrics. But he wanted a place with a good reputation for his shop, so in 1849, he bought a small place on Brompton Road.
His son, Charles Digby Harrod, became the new boss in 1861. The business developed a lot: they sold more and more products and the shop became bigger and bigger. In 1905, the building was as big as now.
Today, it is the biggest store in Great Britain. There are 330 departments: they sell clothes, food, electronics, luxury products, pets, toys, furniture …The store even sells products to the Royal Family.
