‘Once upon a time there lived…'
‘a king!' my little readers will say immediately.
No children, you are mistaken. Once upon a time there lived a piece of wood.

Listen to Nigel reading the fairy tale and try to find the key information > Who are the characters? Where does it take place? What happens?
Read the tale in your workbook and check your hypotheses. Look at the time markers to put the pictures in the right order.
How to understand the timeline of a story:
To tell a story:
Pinocchio, the most famous puppet in the world, first appeared in an Italian magazine in 1881.
He is a verynaughty puppet*, and he doesn't listen to what his father Geppetto, the Blue-haired Fairy or his friend the cricket say to him.
Together with his friend Romeo, they run into a number of bad adventures, and meet a lot of bad characters, like the fox and the cat, the puppet master Mangiafuoco or the enormouswhale*. He is even turned into a donkey!*
But the story has a happy ending, and Pinocchio finally turns into a real flesh-and-blood* little boy.
The story became even more famous after Walt Disney turned it into an animation film in 1940.
Groupwork > Make a team of 5 and write a description of the puppets you need for your final show (Jack, his mother, the stranger, the giant + the beanstalk, the golden harp, the magic hen, the cow…).

No children, you are mistaken. Once upon a time there lived a piece of wood.
Use your descriptions to make your own puppets and present them to the class. There are many ways to make them: you can use socks, plastic or wooden spoons, popsicle sticks, paper and felt.
