We all like to celebrate Christmas in Europe, but Great Britain has some special traditions.

Traditionally in Great Britain, Santa Claus (his name comes from Saint Nicholas) comes to bring gifts to children.
He brings beautiful wrapped presents to good children, and switches* to bad children. Christmas is celebrated on the morning of the 25th of December. Santa comes the night before. He lands on the roof of the children's houses with his reindeer*. He goes down the chimney and fills the stockings*.Santa Claus is usually an old man, rather fat and who laughs a lot. He lives in the North Pole with his Elves*. He works all year round to make the beautiful presents we get! Santa Claus and Father Christmas are often mixed up, even if Father Christmas is a symbol for the Christmas season.
*a switch : une petite branche d'arbre qui servait à battre les enfants autrefois.
*a reindeer : un renne.
*a stocking : une grande chaussette.
*an elf (pl. > elves) : un elfe.

Dear Santa,
This year I have been a good girl! I didn't fight with my sister or argue with my parents. I made my bed in the morning and walked Bouncer the dog. Please don't leave a switch in my stocking! Here is my present list:

- A set of crayons and paint for my art
- A video game

Dear Santa,
I hope you get this letter. I want to get a water gun so I can spray water on my two sisters. They hate it! I also want a new TV for my room, the old one is boring. Last year you brought me socks, that was a terrible present. This year I hope you get it right.

Write down your name on a piece of paper. Give the paper to the teacher. She will give you someone else's name and you must make or find a small present for him or her. Wrap it up and put it on the Christmas pile during the last class before the Christmas holiday. Find your own present and try to guess who was your Secret Santa!
